Ahwazi: Impact of Gotvand Dam Still Felt by Local Farming Community

Ahwazi: Impact of Gotvand Dam Still Felt by Local Farming Community

After its 2012 opening, the status of the Gotvand dam is still seen as a threat to both the livelihood of thousands of Ahwazi farmers and the local environment in the province. The biggest dam on the Karoun river, the Gotvand dam, has had a profoundly negative impact on the situation of the Ahwazi community, which was not involved in the decision at the time in which the dam was opened.

The Gotvand dam is the biggest dam on the Karoun river and was commissioned during the Ahmadinejad administration. It was built near the Gachsaran salt mine, against the advice of experts, which has increased water salinity and severely affected water quality for agricultural use and drinking, according to Mohammad Ali Bani Hashemi, director of the Water Institute of Tehran, in a recent interview.
The dam was opened in 2012, providing electricity and with water siphoned off for sugarcane plantations. According to officials, by 2013 around 7mn tonnes of salt had built up in the bottomr of the dam's reservoir. Frequent preliminary studies since the 1970s and as late as 2004 showed that the dam would cause environmental devastation, but these were ignored and the dam was authorised.

Ahwazis contend that the decision was made because none of the cabinet of the Ahmadinejad and Rouhani administrations came from the region, in spite of its economic importance due to water, farming and oil resources as well as a sizeable heavy industry base and electricity generation. Instead, ministries are dominated by powerful figures from Isfahan, Kerman and Yazd, provinces that have profited from the exploitation of the Ahwaz region.

Ahwazi: MP Denounces Discrimination Faced by Community over Iranian Sugarcane Production

Ahwazi: MP Denounces Discrimination Faced by Community over Iranian Sugarcane Production

Member of the Iranian Parliament Falahieh Majid has labelled the Iranian control of Sugarcane projects as racist against the local Ahwazi Arab population. Describing the valuable employment potential the sugarcane industry has for the local Ahwazi population, Naseri accused the shipping in of non-locals to work on the plantations as a sign of marginalisation of the Ahwazi.

Sugarcane projects are a disaster for indigenous Ahwazi Arabs, the member of parliament for Falahieh (Shadegan) Majid Naseri said this week in an attack on racism.
Naseri criticised the systematic discrimination in employment practices in the Ahwaz region's massive sugar industry that favour non-indigenous populations moved in from other provinces. He attacked the marginalisation of educated and unemployed indigenous Arabs.
The plantations themselves have involved the forced relocation of thousands of native Arabs and environmental destruction due to the amount of water they require and the run-off of agro-industrial pollutants.
In response to Naseri's criticism, an official said: "We import workers from other areas due to a lack of skilled workers in the province."However, Ahwazi Arabs have criticised the lack of training opportunities offered by the government for the numerous industrial projects in their homeland. They also point out that the local labour market has not been fully exploited before bringing in non-local workers.
The plantations were the subject of strong condemnation from UN Special Rapporteur for Adequate Housing, Miloon Kothari, who said following a visit to the region in 2005: "When you visit Ahwaz in terms of the very adverse conditions in the neighbourhoods, there are thousands of people living with open sewers, no sanitation, no regular access to water, electricity and no gas connections. I think that the kind of question that arises is, why is that? Why have certain groups not benefited?
"You notice that we drove outside the city about 20 km and we visited the areas where large development projects are coming up - sugar cane plantations and other projects along the river - and the estimate we received is that between 200,000-250,000 Arab people are being displaced from their villages because of these projects.
"There is an attempt being made by the government to build new towns and bring in new people from other provinces. For example, there is the new town of Shirinshah where most of the people being brought into that town are people from Yazd province [in central Iran] - non-Arabs. So the question then is that these people who are being brought there, perhaps for work and lots of incentives, why is it that those jobs are not going to the locals?"
As a result of his criticism of ethnic discrimination in Iran, the Iranian regime has refused to allow any visits from any UN experts, including the Special Rapporteur on Iran Ahmed Shaheed, who has been banned from the country since he was appointed in 2010.

Ahwazi: Underground Aquifers Polluted By Sugar Factories

Ahwazi: Underground Aquifers Polluted By Sugar Factories

Sugar processing factories are polluting Ahwaz underground water reserves, damaging farm productivity and causing a lack of potable water. Despite high investment in the sugar factory, Iran suffers from a lack of sugar supply and poor distribution and therefore heavily relies on imports. Hence, Ahwazi Arabs are doubly affected: not only do farmers suffer from pollution, but locals are excluded from the job market due to the factories’ discriminatory policy.

Waste water from sugar processing factories is polluting underground aquifers, claimed Abdullah Sameri, Mohammerah (Khorramshahr) representative in the Iranian parliament.
At a recent press conference, Sameri accused the Mirza Kochak Khan sugar factory of failing to abide by its responsibilities and meeting environmental regulations. He claimed that waste water was causing salination of nearby agricultural land and underground water reservoirs, which affected the quality of drinking water and prevented farm productivity.
The Mira Kochak Khan sugar company is one of seven sugar agribusiness enterprise development projects and manages 14,000 hectares of land southwest of the Ahwaz-Mohammerah highway.
Despite investment in the sugar sector, Iran is suffering from a lack of sugar supply and poor distribution. According to Food Press, the lack of sugar in recent weeks has seen prices reach IRR25,000 (USD0.80) per kg, which is around twice the average price on the global commodity markets. This has forced Iran to rely on imported sugar.
Consequently, the Iranian sugar industry is failing to make the country self-sufficient in sugar, yet has caused severe environmental damage. As well as suffering environmental problems, local sugar producers are failing to employ local Arab workers due to discrimination.
